Happy New Year too
Happy New Year to all as well. Yes, those who attend the club on Thursday Nights (and weekends) will definitely be going through a state of withdrawl this month with the RHYC being closed. No Tom, you are not alone.
Here's hoping everyone has a safe and happy new year and don't forget they are planning a Super Bowl Party at the club! Until then, watch the play-offs and get ready for what should be a fun re-opening party at RHYC.
The yacht club has become such a great place to gather during the week - especially for those that don't want to hang out at bars. We sure will miss it. I had a thought - seems like funds are the problem, maybe we could start saving $$ by emailing the newsletter instead of mailing. I'm sure, too, if we put our thinking caps on we could find other ways of finding the funds to keep the club open, if only for the weekends. Lots of people count on it.....

If the Mainstay can do it, there is no reason we can't. You have to keep the option of paper mailing for those who don't use e-mail. The way it works at the Mainstay is you opt in to the e-mail version by submitting your address, and then are taken off the paper mailing list. This would save on postage, even if everyone didn't sign up. Also, don't forget the newsletter is already online at the website.

Yes, Happy New Year to all!
We are going to start an opt-in/opt-out choice for the newsletter eventually. It has been discussed by the board. Problem is, without promotion, we will lose momentum for clubhouse patronage, so we don't want to risk shooting ourselves in the foot.
The board is constantly considering ways to cut overhead. January has always, always been a "loser month" for revenue - and opening the bar one night a week doesn't justify the cost of heating, lights, paying a bartender, etc. If we could count on hordes of people, that would be another matter - but the numbers just aren't there. The cost of a printed newsletter, which all yacht clubs are using, is minimal - especially since ours is printed for free, thanks to Buck and Colette Hearn - in comparison to opening the club and running the bar. We're always open to more suggestions - and if everyone can drum up more support for bar and food service from Thurs. thru Sunday, so much the better - but 20 or so people just won't carry it. The break-even point is 32 people, on any evening.

There would be several reasons for emailing the newsletter - 1st, we're all trying to be a little "greener" these days. 2nd, not only is it the cost of printing the newsletter, but mailing as well. Maybe the general membership could have been contacted earlier to see if there were options, rather than making the decision and then announcing. Unless I missed something, I didn't know it was going to be closed before the decision was made. Will we be having the Wildlife dinner this year - I think that was always in January (although last year, I think there were 11 of us. How did the board come up with the # of 32 people? We're now only getting 11 months of service for a 12 month membership fee.....

I repeat........there is no cost to printing the newsletter. The newsletter printing is donated by the Hearnses. Many people don't read either the printed newsletter or the copy that is posted on our website, as evidenced by the number of phone calls we are still receiving here at home on a weekly basis. People want to know, "...if there is a dinner tonight..." or what the menu is - and they still call here to make reservations. When I tell them to call the manager, they say, "Oh? There's a manager at the club?" If you or anyone else have opinions or suggestions, the board meeting is open to all members. The board meeting is held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. You are welcome to attend.
