Great news, the Junior Olympics is a nationally recognized event with participation from far and wide and has chosen our YC as the venue for the next JO's. My prediction is there will be plenty of great things to come from our association with this event. And from the chatter at the club we have a good jump on the organization. It will take many more volunteers with ideas and were with all to implement those ideas. Is there anyone out there with a contact at a radio station that plays popular music (these are kids and teenagers you know) that might like to broadcast a show or two from the event? Word has it that we already have an "Olympic Flame" that will open the event and burn eternally, for at least two days, anyway. So if you have kids or grandkids that would like to be a part of this, great, if not help out anyway; it promises to be a lot of fun. Best peanut butter eggs I ever had - included Reeses. Well worth the calories. Thought I would mention it because on Sunday, someone came up and paid me some very enthusiastic compliments on "my candy." Much as I would love to have been the chef behind the scenes, I just couldn't take credit. So hats off to "the other Dawn" Sutton. Your long hours and culinary talent are to be applauded!

Comment on A Mid-Winter Knight's Tale

Forsooth, m'lord. Thou art a wise and humorous man. The lords have the month to polish their armor, while the ladies are busy cleaning their velvet dresses. "T'is a good thing," says Martha of the Stewarts, as she repaireth the kilts. The minions say, "Ah-hh!" as they rest their weary bones, and the Palace guard doth clean up his office to make for room to walk. The opening-day bacchanal will take place just three weeks and two days hence with a Super Bowl party - no Christians or lions, but there might be a raven or an eagle. The mead chilleth - and the cook fires will be re-lighted. The Exchequer will emerge from his darkened room with a smile - and all the friendly dogs will bark. It will be a great day - and rejoicing will be heard throughout the RHYC land.

Comment on Happy New Year too

I repeat........there is no cost to printing the newsletter. The newsletter printing is donated by the Hearnses. Many people don't read either the printed newsletter or the copy that is posted on our website, as evidenced by the number of phone calls we are still receiving here at home on a weekly basis. People want to know, "...if there is a dinner tonight..." or what the menu is - and they still call here to make reservations. When I tell them to call the manager, they say, "Oh? There's a manager at the club?" If you or anyone else have opinions or suggestions, the board meeting is open to all members. The board meeting is held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. You are welcome to attend.

Comment on Happy New Year too

There would be several reasons for emailing the newsletter - 1st, we're all trying to be a little "greener" these days. 2nd, not only is it the cost of printing the newsletter, but mailing as well. Maybe the general membership could have been contacted earlier to see if there were options, rather than making the decision and then announcing. Unless I missed something, I didn't know it was going to be closed before the decision was made. Will we be having the Wildlife dinner this year - I think that was always in January (although last year, I think there were 11 of us. How did the board come up with the # of 32 people? We're now only getting 11 months of service for a 12 month membership fee.....

Comment on Happy New Year too

Yes, Happy New Year to all!
We are going to start an opt-in/opt-out choice for the newsletter eventually. It has been discussed by the board. Problem is, without promotion, we will lose momentum for clubhouse patronage, so we don't want to risk shooting ourselves in the foot.
The board is constantly considering ways to cut overhead. January has always, always been a "loser month" for revenue - and opening the bar one night a week doesn't justify the cost of heating, lights, paying a bartender, etc. If we could count on hordes of people, that would be another matter - but the numbers just aren't there. The cost of a printed newsletter, which all yacht clubs are using, is minimal - especially since ours is printed for free, thanks to Buck and Colette Hearn - in comparison to opening the club and running the bar. We're always open to more suggestions - and if everyone can drum up more support for bar and food service from Thurs. thru Sunday, so much the better - but 20 or so people just won't carry it. The break-even point is 32 people, on any evening.

Comment on Happy New Year too

If the Mainstay can do it, there is no reason we can't. You have to keep the option of paper mailing for those who don't use e-mail. The way it works at the Mainstay is you opt in to the e-mail version by submitting your address, and then are taken off the paper mailing list. This would save on postage, even if everyone didn't sign up. Also, don't forget the newsletter is already online at the website.

Comment on Happy New Year too

The yacht club has become such a great place to gather during the week - especially for those that don't want to hang out at bars. We sure will miss it. I had a thought - seems like funds are the problem, maybe we could start saving $$ by emailing the newsletter instead of mailing. I'm sure, too, if we put our thinking caps on we could find other ways of finding the funds to keep the club open, if only for the weekends. Lots of people count on it.....

Comment on Commodores' Dinner 2008

Happy New Year everyone!!!! It's going to be a difficult month not having the Yacht Club to go to. Tom will definitely be in withdrawal on Thursday nights. Madi, Nola and I will be there regularly to chase a tennis ball and take a cold water swim (the dogs, that is). Hopefully, we'll all be able to get together somewhere on a Thursday night in January. See you all in February.

Comment on Commodores' Dinner 2008

Great to see everyone looking good in their Yacht Club Best after a summer full of shorts, T-shirts, and "sailor hair." (I may be the worst case of that last one.) It's a shame to hear the V/C never has any money. Perhaps John Conley could see if there are any leftover dishes to wash? :~)
